What is psychosis?

psychotic experience or psychotic episode is a mental health problem that causes people to perceive or interpret things differently from those around them. Psychosis can result in difficulties determining what is real and what is not.

Psychosis affects people in different ways. One might experience it once, have short episodes throughout their life, or live with it most of their life.

Symptoms of psychosis

Symptoms may include delusions (strong beliefs that are not real and held with conviction despite lack of evidence to support those beliefs) and hallucinations (having perceptions without stimulus, like hearing voices, seeing and, feeling, smelling or tasting things that aren’t there; the most common hallucination is hearing voices). Other symptoms may include incoherent speech and inappropriate behavior. There may also be sleep disturbances, lack of motivation, difficulties carrying out daily activities and social withdrawal.

Its important psychosis is treated as soon as possible, as early treatment can be more effective.

 

Causes of psychosis

Psychosis can be triggered by:
A medical/ physical condition like brain tumor
Stress
A traumatic experience
Substance misuse
Some prescribed medications
Alcohol misuse

Psychosis can also be due to specific mental health condition, such as:
Severe Depression
Schizophrenia
Bipolar Affective Disorder

Treating psychosis

Treatment involves bio-psycho-social approach.

Biological treatment:
If the underlying condition is identified it should be treated first, for example, to withdraw the medication or to stop using the illicit drug.
Antipsychotic medication can help relieve the psychotic symptoms

Psychological treatment:
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has proved successful in helping people with psychosis.
Family interventions and psychoeducation (a form of therapy that may involve partners, family members, and close friends) can help reducing the need for hospital admission.

Social intervention:
support with social needs, such as education, employment, or accommodation can reduce the stress and improve
